After spending three unforgettable weeks exploring Japan in 2024, one experience stood out above the rest: a formal kimono photo shoot in Kyoto. I’ve worn kimonos before, but this was my first time doing it in such a traditional and professional setting. The result? Absolute magic.

Let me paint the scene: cobblestone paths, wooden teahouses, and soft sunlight breaking through temple trees—this shoot felt like stepping into a living painting. Kyoto, with its blend of ancient charm and quiet elegance, was the perfect place for something so timeless.

What made this experience even more meaningful was the care and attention of the kimono artists. From the moment I walked into the shop, they treated me with such warmth and respect. Although I usually represent pink and green—Skee-Wee to all my Sorors out there—this time I let them take the lead. When I saw the kimono they picked, I couldn’t help but grin. Let’s just say, it was a divine alignment I didn’t expect but completely embraced.

Oh—and yes, the shoes were surprisingly comfortable. You’d think walking in geta or zori sandals would be hard, but I barely noticed. I was too caught up in the moment: walking through Kyoto’s narrow streets, hearing the rustle of silk with every step, and feeling completely immersed in Japanese tradition.

Another fun moment? I tried to do the viral Mamushi dance during the shoot. Keyword: tried. Doing any kind of choreography while wrapped in layers of silk is no small task. Let’s just say it looked better in my head than it did on camera—but it made for a memory I’ll never forget.

This trip also lined up with Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Founders’ Day, which made it even more special. To celebrate that day in Kyoto, dressed in elegance, channeling tradition, and honoring sisterhood—there are no words. It was a full-circle moment I’ll always cherish.
